Wanapum Recreation Area is a beautiful part of Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. This place is a real paradise, what can be better than sun, water, camping and beautiful scenery? The state park is located on the banks of the Columbia River, close to the town of Vantage.
Recreation area offers great possibilities for recreation: swimming, fishing, hiking, wildlife watching and more. Wonderful RV camping, tent camping and day use facilities can be also found here.
Take into consideration that visitors and guests report about strong winds at the Wanapum Campground. It should be said that winds of 50 MPH are often felt here.
Every camping loop (there are two of them) has water, sewer hookups and electricity. Each site is well maintained, offers wonderful privacy, nice metal tables and fire pits. Sites 13 and 15 are considered to be ideal as they are located on the far side and look out onto Columbia River.
Tent campers can also use the full hook-up sites, but they need to pay the RV camping price.
The first loop, sites 1-31, are located among the trees that provide nice shade, the second loop, sites 32-50, can be viewed as desert-like sites.
The swimming area is wonderful, but be prepared to spend some time on the path, because the way to the beach is long. The beach area is grassy and has lots of barbecue pits and tables. There are 57 unsheltered picnic tables that are available on first come, first served basis.
Informational signs and displays as well as the interpretive kiosks are available at the Ginkgo Petrified Forest. This recreation area is open all year round, but during summer we recommend making a reservation in advance.
