The Skagit River in North Cascades National Park is known for its stunning beauty, but one of its most fascinating features is its unusual color. The river's water is often a bright turquoise or jade green, a color that is caused by a phenomenon known as glacial flour. Glacial flour is a fine-grained sediment that is created when glaciers grind rocks into a powder. This powder is then carried by meltwater into the river, where it gives the water its distinctive color. The more glacial flour that is present in the water, the more intense the color will be. The Skagit River is particularly prone to glacial flour because it is fed by several glaciers in the North Cascades. These glaciers are constantly grinding rocks into powder, and this powder is then washed into the river. As a result, the Skagit River is often one of the most colorful rivers in the world.
In Autumn 2019, filmmaker Roman Khomlyak used a Panasonic GH5 camera to beautifully capture a mist-covered forest in North Cascades National Park.
