If you are planning hiking or backpacking trip in Mount Baker Area, and are looking for a peaceful and safe place for overnight, or if you just want to spend a weekend camping somewhere among beautiful landscape, enjoying fantastic views, Silver Fir Campground will suit you perfectly.
Located in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Silver Fir Campground is a great place for camping both in hot summer and in cool autumn. In summer you will feel comfortable here as the huge trees of a remarkable old-growth forest will provide you with plenty of shade, thus saving you from the heat and the clean waters of the North Fork Nooksack River, along which the campground is located, will cool you down and provide you with many recreation opportunities.
In autumn Silver Fir Campground will amaze you with spectacular views of the surrounding area decorated with fantastic fall colors.
The location of Silver Fir Campground is its additional advantage, as it is only about 10 miles away from the Heather Meadows Visitor Center, and about 14 miles away from Glacier (which is the closest place to the campground with the stores and restaurants). From this campground you may get to a great variety of scenic trails, which are located at this area and are relatively close to Silver Fir Campground.
Silver Fir Campground comprises 21 sites. 15 sites out of 21 can be reserved through the web site www.recreation.gov or by the phone number, mentioned above. The rest of the sites are on “first come, first served” basis. The sites are different in size and location. Some of them are closer to the highway, and that is why the traffic noise may reach you, others are more remote from the road and thus more peaceful. Some have beautiful views of the river, and from some sites there are short paths leading to the river. There are also 3 sites which are wheelchair accessible. A part of camping sites are for tents only, and some of them are for tents and RVs.
Among the features, provided by the campground, are the following:
- picnic tables;
- campfire rings with grills;
- vault toilets;
- drinking water;
- garbage bins;
- group picnic shelter which may accommodate up to 25 people.
But there are no electrical hookups here.
The dogs are permitted at the campground but the administration asks not to allow them run around freely, in order not to disturb a bear (which can be met there) and not to bring it to you. Wild animals are also the reason why you need to be careful with food storage.
The blue waters of North Fork Nooksack River are great for swimming in summer. A wide gravel bar between the campground and river waters is a great place for kids to play and to take the sunbaths. Among other water activities, Silver Fir Campground may offer you fishing, kayaking and rafting.
Fees and discounts:
Camping: 16$ per night for a single site (which includes maximum of 6 people and 1 vehicle) and 30$ per night for a multisite (double), which includes maximum of 12 people and 2 vehicles. Extra vehicle fee is 8$ per night
America the Beautiful Senior and Access Passports may be honored for a 50% discount off the campsite price. Discount is for the campsite of the holder only, and the full price should be paid for an extra vehicle unless the camper with an extra vehicle also has a second pass.
Just enjoy your time, spent under the crowns of huge ancient silver firs and western red cedars, with their branches covered by moss, admire all the amazing views the Silver Fir Campground provides you with and you will never forget this reunion with the nature at this wonderful, secluded place.
If you are traveling from Seattle, drive on I-5 to Bellingham. Then you should take Exit 255 to State Hwy 542 and drive for about 48,5 miles until you reach the campground.
If you are getting there from Glacier, drive east about 14 miles on Mt. Baker Highway State Route 542. You will find the campground on the west side of the highway, just after the Hwy crosses the North Fork Nooksack River near mile post 46.
